A few facts
When Nile was growing up, she wasn't allowed to watch TV unless it was educational, the same went for her younger brother Jordan. The only exception to this came when she was in her teens and Mrs. Freeman got hooked on Lost, Nile's pretty sure she had a thing for Daniel Dae Kim, and she wasn't going to argue.
Books, on the other hand, she could read whatever she could get ahold of, Mrs. Freeman was a big believer in reading being educational in and of itself because of the parts of the brain it engaged. This also meant that Nile read plenty of 'banned' books, especially those banned by her school for ridiculous reasons (like Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Warrior Cats and etc.) She also started a Banned Book Club with some friends, where they passed these books around and all read them.
She was in a roller-derby group with many of the same friends from Banned Book Club, and one year Nile broke her wrist during a practice, not even an tournament, which was what really upset her about it. Though that was the year she learned to pick locks from YouTube because it was summer vacation and she couldn't do much else with a cast on.
She and the roller-derby-banned-book club friends, along with Jordan, went to Comic-Con one year, the girls cosplayed the Spice Girls one day just for fun. Jordan had asked her to come because Mrs. Freeman wouldn't let him go alone, and didn't want to leave Nile home for the weekend while she took him. Mrs. Freeman and one of the Roller Derby Banned Book Club moms came along as chaperones and everyone had a good time.
The one time Nile almost got in trouble at school was for decking a fellow senior, Freddie Thompson, who had been making Jordan's life a living hell. Right hook straight to the jaw, and if it hadn't been after an after-hours practice, and if he'd wanted to admit to getting knocked flat by a girl, there would have been more trouble, but it was, and he kept quiet, but did leave Jordan alone after that.
The things Nile can cook are:
- Fancy-as-hell Grilled Cheese (or melts, really since they've often got meat in them)
- The Freeman Family Secret Recipe Gumbo
- The Freeman Family Molasses Spice Cake
- Rolled sugar cookies with mock-royal icing, so that they look super fancy but aren't at risk of breaking a tooth.
She got the Family Secret Recipe for gumbo from Nana Freeman -her father's ma'- who lived in New Orleans and made it every Christmas, usually by the vat so that she could serve it up to neighbors or anyone else who stopped by, for whatever reason. Likewise, Mrs. Freeman would volunteer at the local Loaves and Fishes at least one Sunday of Advent and often during Lent, and usually brought the kids with her, so helping people is nothing new to Nile.
